London, Desmond Harmsworth, 1932
£1,750

This is Harmsworth's scarce first issue with the marbled blue 'night' endpapers and better quality cloth binding. A spectacular piece of book design and a brilliant novel. Selected by by Cyril Connolly as one the hundred key books of the modern movement. Although this may appear slightly heretical, and the genius of the Little Prince notwithstanding, this is the author's best book.
The author's 1931 Femina Prize Novel concerns the perils of pioneer aviation. It was also the basis for the MGM film directed by Clarence Brown and featuring Clark Gable.

Description

First English edition, first impression, first issue; 8vo; publisher's blue cloth, titles and star device to spine in silver, marbled endpapers, grey topstain, with the dust jacket; spine gently rolled, topstain faded, very mild ghosting to spine through the dust jacket but an exceptional copy in the lightly spotted, and tanned dust jacket missing a small piece at the top of the spine panel. A lovely copy.
