Tancoigne was attached to the French embassy in Persia and made three trips to Constantinople and spent three years in Crete (1812-14). He had little interest in antiquities, rather he was concerned with the present state of the local people. The English edition is scarce.

First English edition. 8vo, xvi, 402 pp., 2 pages ads at end, Large folding map and plate of Harem scene, original drab paper-backed blue boards, original paper label (worn), upper joint cracked but firm, title and plate spotted, well preserved in a very handsome brown morocco backed clamshell box, lettered in gilt.
