Following the return of David Livingstone from Africa in 1857 a coalition of groups from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and Dublin established the The Universities' Mission, the first missionary society representing the high church end of the Anglican Church. The Mission existed from 1859 to 1909. This map, covering British Central Africa, German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa (parts of modern South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania), is presumed to have been produced as part of the fund-raising activities of the society. A highly unusual and interesting map.
