Following a suggestion of the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, Chairman of the National Geographic Society, the Russian ethnographer Afanasyev-Chuzhbinskiy (1816-75) travelled in 1856 to the Pridnestroviye region to study life and culture of Malorossiya, Bessarabia and Transnistria. He consigned his extensive and valuable observations of the local traditions and folklore in these 'Essays on the Dniepr', followed two years later by 'Essays on the Dniestr'.
