Death Comes as the End is unique among Christie's novels in avoiding near-contemporary settings and in featuring no European characters. Drawing on the experience of trips to the Middle East while accompanying her second husband, the noted archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan, Christie's plot unwinds in ancient Thebes, in the home of Imhotep, an Egyptian mortuary priest. Despite the long-distant time, the domestic surroundings and developed characters attract the interest and sympathy of the reader as ever more people are murdered. The novel received mixed reviews, winning from some critics high praise and from others scepticism at its newly invented genre of historical detective mystery. One of very few Christie novels never to have been adapted for performance, Death Comes as the End shows a little-known side of the author's literary talent.
