Slidell Mackenzie (1803-48) was an accomplished man of letters, producing several volumes of travel writing and biographies of early U.S. naval figures; A Year in Spain was his first published work. As a U.S. naval officer, he is however most famous for his decision in 1842 to execute three suspected mutineers aboard a ship under his command, the USS Somers.

An attractive set of the first English edition, preceded only by the American edition of 1829.
