AA Milne first editions

Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956), more famously abbreviated to A.A. Milne, is without question best known for the creation of Christopher Robin (both literally & literarily) and Christopher’s childhood companion Winnie-the Pooh, whose adventures together first appeared in book-form in Winnie-the-Pooh in 1926.

The popularity of the four books (When we were Very YoungWinnie-the-PoohNow we are SixThe House at Pooh Corner) sometimes known as the ‘Christopher Robin Books‘, that he collaborated on with E.H. Shepard, established A.A. Milne and his children’s characters as household names, but A.A. Milne did write numerous other works for other, less sophisticated audiences. These include numerous plays, most famously perhaps his dramatic rendering of one of his own favourite books The Wind in the Willows (Toad of Toad Hall, 1929); detective fiction (The Red House Mystery) and other novels for grown-ups.

Collecting A.A. Milne First Editions

A.A. Milne first editions vary in price considerably, with the Christopher Robin books being the most sought after and potentially valuable. For more information on these please click here. The first published book by A.A. Milne, Lovers in London (1905, derived from a series of articles that A. A. Milne wrote for The St James Gazette as a young man) is a known scarcity, but only fetches in the high hundreds for a first edition.

Milne was a very successful playwright, penning popular plays such as Mr Pim Passes By (1919) and Michael & Mary (1929), and his plays in first edition are sought out by collectors, especially when inscribed from Milne; prices for plays by Milne can range between circa £100 to £2000+ when inscribed.

A.A. Milne wrote a handful of novels, most famously perhaps his experiment with ‘intuitional’ detective fiction, The Red House Mystery (1922), a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone, first editions of which in dust-jacket can cost thousands of pounds depending on condition. His other novels tend to be less collectable and less valuable, though again a personalised inscription from Milne can elevate the value of these exponentially.

A selection of the A.A. Milne first editions we currently have in stock are presented below. If you would like further information on books by A.A. Milne please contact Angus Robb or Roddy Newlands in our Literature department.
