Edmund Dulac Illustrated Books

Edmund Dulac was a prominent illustrator of the 'Golden Age' whose illustrations for fairy stories and children's books of the early twentieth century are noted for their lavish colour plates and fine bindings.

His intense colour watercolour combinations inspired by Persian and Indian miniature painting has made a lasting impression on children’s books.

Dulac was born in Toulouse, studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts before moving to London in 1904 and becoming a naturalised British citizen 1912. Through becoming a member of the London Sketch Club Dulac met the foremost book and magazine illustrators of the time. These contacts led to his contract with Hodder & Stoughton, who acquired the publishing rights for many of Dulac’s artworks for their illustrated gift book series that included Sindbad the Sailor and Other Stories from the Arabian Nights, The Tempest and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
