The Nobel Prize-winning fiction writer Ernest Hemingway was catapulted to international fame with ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, and his seven novels and 6 short story collections that became American classics.
His economical and understated style combined with stark realism was finely tuned during his time as a foreign correspondent in Paris, a style that he termed as 'the iceberg theory and which subsequently had an immeasurable influence on 20th-century fiction.

First edition, first printing, first issue with 'stoppped' on p.181; 8vo; publisher's black cloth, gold paper title labels to upper board and spine printed in black; cloth just a touched marked, labels with a little very minor scuffing, a genuinely very good copy.

8vo; full complement of blank pages; printing department binding of green cloth, gilt lettered lettering-piece to spine (later addition), plain paper endpapers to front (paste-residue showing and offsetting), heavier, more finished salmon ones to rear, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, soiling and fading to boards and spine but sound and solid; hand-written letter loosely inserted (215 x 140 mm), folded horizontally twice, creased at corners, short split to right margin of each fold, otherwise very good.
