Having spent several years at Eton teaching Arabic and Turkish, Barker joined the consular service at Tarsus in Syria from 1838. Ainsworth participated in the Euphrates Expedition led by Chesney. Barker's father had served as consul in Syria and Egypt and his godfather was John Lewis Burckhardt. 'A very interesting work' (Blackmer).

First edition. 8vo, xiv, 394 pp., wood-engraved vignette on title, folding map, wood-engraved plates and illustrations in text, contemporary blue polished calf gilt by Bickers & Son, covers ruled in gilt, spine in six compartments, morocco lettering piece to second, others richly gilt, raised bands marbled edges, light fade to spine, an excellent copy.
