Along with modern first editions, guide books are one of the most accessible places to start a collection of rare books. The classic guide books (Baedeker’s, Murray’s and Thomas Cook handbooks) were published at the beginning of the industrial revolution. As transport became easier, the nouveau riche sought to undertake grand tours of Europe and the Baedeker was an invaluable accompaniment, just as Lonely Planet guided young gap year students in the 80s and 90s.
