Subscriber's edition, one of 100 copies on Imperial Japan Paper; 51 volumes, 8vo; illustrated with etched plates throughout in two states, both with captioned tissue-guards, handsome contemporary binding in full crushed morocco, spines gilt in compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering direct, all edges gilt, wide inner dentelles gilt, floral endpapers, fading to spine and rubbing to some spine extremities, a few mildly worn, otherwise a fine set.

I, natural toning, a few spots to preliminary leaves of first two vols, otherwise near-fine; near-contemporary full green morocco by 'Wiseman', double gilt panelled, Bishopric armourial device to boards and 'heavenly keys' and Bishop's Mitre devices to spines, dentelles, all in gilt, all edges gilt, rubbed at extremities, boards a little patchy, otherwise very good.

Early issue, 'two hundred and twenty-fifth thousand'; advertisements at front and end, one advertisment leaf loose, some browning/foxing to leaves at front and end; publisher's pictorial wrappers worn and soiled, some repair work to around spine but original printed backstrip present; together with a loose typed letter signed from Hume to a Mr O'Donnell dated 10th November 1905, both housed in a modern slip-case, reproducing the top and rear boards of the book.

Remnant of old label to upper spine, some scuffing with loss and general wear, front hinge partially cracked, leaves quite bright though with some light soiling in places, one leaf with a closed cut to center.
