Natural History

In the natural history department, we focus on the great flower and bird books of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly the work of artists such as Audubon, Catesby, Elliott, Gould, and Redoute. These books are not only works of art in their own right, but also provide a valuable record of many species sadly extinct.

  1. First edition. 2 volumes in 1, folio (52 x 34.5 cm). 63 copper engraved plates, including 61 printed in colour and finished by hand, contemporary veau blond gilt by Bozerian (signed at foot of spine), flat spine with monkey tools in compartments, all edges gilt, a fine copy.

Title, [4] introduction, 27 hand-coloured engraved maps and 55 lithographs on india paper on 31 sheets, each map accompanied with printed leaves of text; bookseller's printed overslip ('Paris [...] Vve. Bouchard-Huzard') pasted onto date of title page, a few maps lightly browned, some spotting, mostly marginal. Contemporary green half morocco, gilt rules to covers, spine with raised bands gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers; neatly rebacked preserving spine, neat repairs to extremities.

Fourth edition, Imperial copy on thick white wove paper, 8vo, x, 526 pp, engraved vignette on title page, title variant A (without Bell and Rivington in imprint) and 'Price One Guinea' (denoting imperial copy) on title, 200 wood-engravings by Bewick, 104 smaller vignettes, nineteenth century red morocco gilt extra by J. Clarke, covers with gilt panel with floral tooling to corners within gilt borders, spine in six compartments, gilt lettered direct in second, others richly gilt with floral tools within framed borders, raised bands with gilt filletsgilt inner dentelles,all edges gilt, a fine copy.

II), some offsetting to title pages, slight marginal spotting throughout, decorated endpapers; restored preserving the contemporary diced calf, spine gilt decorated and lettered, slightly rubbed; pp.viii, 351,364; overall a very attractive set.
