Our Russian and Eastern European section gathers Western books on these regions (‘Rossica’ among others) as well as works in vernacular, including Russian and Polish. Other rare items related to Russia and Eastern Europe can be found in our map department, our photography section, as well as in the prints section. Contemporary red morocco by Reeb, St. Petersburg, large green morocco label with gilt lettering to upper cover, gilt border to boards, flat spine richly tooled in gold; slightly rubbed, corners very slightly bumped, preserved in a modern red morocco-backed box with transparent upper cover.

James and 6 numbered plates on 5 folding sheets of stronger paper; repeated lithographic title, title, table of contents, 638 pp., [1] l.; vii including title, 273 pp., [1] l.; atlas of 16 plates on 12 folding sheets of stronger paper, one on thiner -- in all 22 plates plates lithographed by H. James under the direction of Cameron, numbered I-XX with XVIa and including a rarer 'Sheet III' on thiner paper, some with outline hand-colour; light spotting to text, maps with occasional soiling, some folds with short tears. Contemporary red cloth, covers with blind-stamped panel decoration, flat spines lettered in gilt; spines rubbed and faded with shelfmark labels to foot, slipcase strengthened.

The hinged lid applied with a parcel-gilt silver plaque engraved in French 'The President of the French Republic Émile Loubét', below an enamel seal of the French Republic with crossed French and Russian flags, the lid further applied with a spray of tobacco leaves and a trompe l'oeil cigar band, raised bead and leaf tip borders, the sides applied with silver fleurons, the hinged front with keyhole escutcheon engraved with details of the Saatchi & Mangoubi tobacco company, its cover with the Imperial Russian arms, the silk-lined interior with two tiers of hinged trays, the underside of the lid with gilt French inscription 'Suppliers to the Court of his Majesty the Emperor of Russia, Company of the Tobacco Factory, Saatschy & Mangouby, St Petersburg' beneath the Imperial Warrant, 84 standard, with original key

First edition; folio (53 x 34 cm); 100 lithographed plates on India paper, 1 unnumbered lithographed title (between plates 69 and 70) + 13 duplicates (plates 42, 44, 48, 73 other title and on china, 75 other title and on china, 77, 84, and 6 duplicates and other states in the portrait section): 114 plates in total; 19-century quarter brown morocco over marbled boards by Leon Lemardeley of Paris, spine in six compartments, letters gilt to second, raised bands, top edge gilt; extremities rubbed. Large damp-stain in the top margin of several leaves towards the end, otherwise a very clean copy.
