Within the canon of Russian children's literature, there are few writers as popular as Lidiia Churilova (1875 – 1937), who went by the pseudonym Charskaia. The Russian Symbolist Fedor Sologub even claimed that she was more popular than Krylov in Russia and Andersen in Denmark. From 1901 to 1918 Charskaia wrote and published more than 180 works, rendering her 'a ruler of the hearts and the minds' of many generations of Russian children.
