An attractive limited edition of Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal in Pattern and Prose translated into English by C. Bower Alcock. One of 500 copies signed and numbered by the illustrator, Beresford Egan, of which this is number 83.

Laid in is an autograph note signed by R.L. Porter, dated February 1990 (on the recto of one folded quarto sheet) 'Les Fleurs du Mal. Baudelaire. The binding is dark green morocco with onlays of red, yellow, blue, mauve, purple, orange, green, grey & black, gold & blind tooling. The onlaid petals have two shapes, which are reversible, & two sizes, to make both flowers & leaves. The theme is simple the bright colours on the upper cover symbolize the delights & pleasures; the lower cover with its sombre effects symbolizes the 'du mal' element. Limited edition, number 83 of 500 copies signed by the illustrator; large 4to, (29.2 x 23.3 cm); 15 full-page line drawings in black and white by Beresford Egan, colour frontispiece with captioned tissue guard ('Imaginary Portrait of Baudelaire'), title vignette and vignette on p.135 in black and green, decorative woodcut initials and tail-pieces, autograph note by the bookbinder tipped in, minimal foxing and marginal soiling; modern dark-green morocco by Robert Porter with a stylised floral and leaf design, top edge trimmed, others uncut, edges slightly browned, overall an excellent copy; 142, [1, printer's imprint], [1, blank]pp.
