Iribe was a French designer and fashion illustrator who for a while was a member of the Ballets Russes circle, hence these depictions of the troupe's most celebrated dancer. Nijinsky is shown here dancing in the ballets Giselle and Scheherazade. The poet, Jean Cocteau was keen to have his work associated with that of the Ballets Russes in the hope that Serge Diaghilev would in turn want to collaborate with him.
