Francisco Canes (1720-1795) was a Spanish orientalist that spent 16 years devoted to the study of oriental languages in Damascus, where he was sent by the Franciscan order, before returning to Spain where he studied at the Royal Academy of History. This dictionary focuses on colloquial rather than classical Arabic and was apparently intended for the use of missionaries in Africa and the Middle East.
