Hoskins (1802-63), travelled in Egypt in 1832-3 and was resident for some months in Thebes where he was in contact with Robert Hay who lived in an ancient tomb at Qurna and who provided a genial meeting place for European travellers visiting the area. This work is an account of his journey to the Great Oasis to the west of Thebes and other oases in the Libyan Desert. Subsequently Hoskins became secretary of the White Nile Association before abandoning his Egyptological interests to devote himself to social issues, particularly prisons.
