Moses Harris (1731-1788) was one of the foremost lepidopterists of the day. The Aurelian was Harris's great work, and contained lavish illustrations and a text written in a richly flowing style, eloquently imparting Harris's skill as a master of observation and methodical recorder of insect life and behaviour. The artistic composition and minute detail of the paintings by Harris are unsurpassed and the folio book contains forty-four finely engraved copper-plate prints faithfully reproducing his works. The insects are shown in various resting and flight positions among flowers and vegetation, occasionally with random artefacts, vases, or collecting equipment.
