John Laurence (1668-1732), a Northamptonshire clergyman, devoted as much time as possible to gardening, not always to the pleasure of his parishioners. He wrote extensively on gardening, the present work being his most ambitious.

The frontispiece by Jan Van der Gucht, shows a perspective view of Richmond Lodge, the favourite residence of the Prince of Wales, the dedicatee of the book. A great influence on Laurence was the noted gardener, Richard Bradley, the most prolific author on the subject in the early eighteenth century.
