BARNES, Julian.

Flaubert's Parrot.

London, Jonathan Cape, 1984
£1,750

Probably Barnes's most highly regarded work; with his signed presentation inscription to the title-page: 'to Tom & Regina and to Les Aspres where Flaubert never went, with love from Julian July 1993'. The recipients were Tom Maschler and his wife. Maschler (who's bookplate is tipped onto the front paste down) was an editor at Cape and saw many of Barnes' titles through the press. Why this example was inscribed some nine years after publication is unclear but significant association copies of this particular title are very uncommon.
