In 1787, after a sojourn at Constantinople in the service of Choiseul-Gouffier, Le Chevalier accompanied Alexander Ipsilanti, the Hospodar (ruler) of Moldavia, to Jassy where he spent several months. It may have been this visit which inspired him to undertake an extended work on the regions around the Black Sea. The geographical information was collected by Colonel Lafitte and transmitted to Le Chevalier by the engineer Monnier. The maps illustrate the Sea of Marmora, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the Bosphorus, Constantinople and Burssa. Much of the work relates to Constantinople.
