Markham's voyage to the Barents Sea during the navigable season in order to ascertain the best route for future Polar discovery. Markham's view that the west coast of Franz Josef Land via the Barents Sea during August and September was the best starting point for polar exploration was later confirmed by Leigh Smith on board the steam vessel Eira.
