'Marsigli had a long experience with the Ottoman empire beginning with a stay of eleven months at Constantinople c.1679 when he accompanied Ciurani, Venetian representative to the Porte ... After the peace of Carlowitz in 1699 the Emperor Leopold appointed him to establish the limits of frontiers between Turkey, Venice and Hungary. His important work on the military system of the Ottoman empire concerns itself with its finances, revenues, commerce etc. Marsigli gives an account of the different military functionaries as well as a description of the different types of artillery, mines, fireworks, etc.' (Blackmer).
