Newton was vice-consul at Mitylene and resided in the Levant from 1852-1859. The expeditions to Asia Minor took place between 1856-1859 and were mostly concerned with the excavations of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The present work contains the popular account of these digs together with Newton's life in Mitylene, the local inhabitants, etc. Newton also carried out excavations at Kalymnos.

The plates include views in Rhodes, Cos, Kalymnos, and Mitylene, as well as illustrations of the sculptures from the mausoleum.
