An old Etonian and part of the social milieu captured by Evelyn Waugh in Brideshead Revisited, Byron travelled to India in 1929 as special correspondent for the Daily Express, venturing into Tibet.
The book is really two separate narratives: the first a sort of cultural tour of Soviet Russia in the 1920's; the second covering the trade route from Sikkim to Gyantse and the difficulties of gaining permission to visit Tibet.
