A vivid description of life on a whaler. Nordhoff (1830-1901) was an American who saw the advert for crew in New York. He was the grandfather of Charles Bernard Nordhoff who co-wrote a novel, Mutiny on the Bounty, aconcerning Fletcher Christian's mutiny against Captain Bligh.
