In 1798 Lacerda attempted to establish a route between the East and West Coast of Africa, making Mozambique an important trading post. He managed to reach Cazembe where he died but his journey added greatly to the geographical knowledge of the interior of Africa. Burton's portion of the book ends on p.164. The Royal Geographical Society rejected the two appendices also written by him, being of a controversial and critical nature.
