Firsts: London's Rare Book Fair 2022

Firsts, London’s Rare Book Fair returns to the Saatchi gallery on the King’s Road from 15th to 18th September 2022.  This year marks the 65th edition of one of the most popular and prestigious rare book fairs in the world.  As Stephen Fry said ‘We are very lucky to have this kind of fair… it’s not elitist, it’s not specialist, you don’t have to be a scholar, you just have to be someone with an immense thirst for the glory of books’.

Look forward to welcoming you to Stand C23 on the ground floor.

  1. Limited edition, number 48 out of 320 copies signed by the Author and the Illustrator; 8vo 15 colour plates by Barnett Freedman, fore-edges to four leaves crudely cut but not affecting text, otherwise fine; publisher's pictorial vellum, top edge gilt others untrimmed, pictorial dust-jacket, mild fading to spine and head slightly bumped, original slip-case, edges rubbed, especially on corners, otherwise an exceptionally good and clean copy.

  2. First edition; 8vo; frontispiece by Graham Robertson, occasional spotting and browning, slightly worn at extremities, otherwise very good; publisher's pictorial blue-green cloth stamped in gilt, leaves uncut (as published), some marks to binding, head and foot of spine bumped with minor tears, upper joint splitting, otherwise, also very good; preserved in a modern, bespoke dark blue morocco solander box.

  3. Limited edition, number 4 of 200 large paper copies, signed by both the author and the illustrator; 4to (230 x 190 mm); printed on hand-made paper, illustrations by E.H. Shepard, folding map at rear; publisher's green cloth-backed boards, paper label on spine, leaves uncut, printed dust-jacket, endpapers slightly browned, extremities and spine label slightly spotted, dust-jacket with two small closed tears at spine ends, otherwise a fine copy preserved in a custom made blue cloth solander box.

  4. First edition; 4to, (28 x 22 cm); dedication and advertisement leaves, 100 hand-coloured engraved plates after Hayes, his wife and children, without the frontispiece plate (as often), some offsetting to prelims, leaves slightly toned; crushed green morocco gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, spine gilt in compartments with bird motifs, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, an excellent example.

  5. First collected edition, 2 volumes, folio, half-title in volume 1, 21 engraved plates including frontispieces, bookplates; contemporary mottled calf gilt, red morocco lettering piece, Marquis of Stafford gilt arms to covers, joints cracked but firm, corners worn, a very good set.

  6. Limited edition, one of 25 deluxe large paper copies; 4to; printed in green, red and black, illustrations by Charles Ricketts, some minor spotting to extremities and frontispiece tissue-guard, otherwise very good; publisher's decorative vellum gilt, signed by CR (Charles Ricketts) and HL (Henry Leighton, binder), original cloth ties (lightly spotted), uncut edges, covers a little bowed, spine a little darkened, otherwise, also very good; preserved in a custom-made cardboard slip-case.

  7. First edition, first impression, 8vo. Publisher's black boards, oriental characters stamped in gilt on front board, titles to spine in silver, bamboo effect endpapers. With the dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping. Spine very gently rolled, tiny nick to the fore edge of one leaf, but a superb copy in the brilliant dust jacket entirely free from any of the fading which plagues this book. A truly exceptional example.

  8. First edition, first impression; 8vo; Publisher's black boards, dagger device to upper board in blind and silver, titles to spine in silver, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. Spine lightly rolled but an excellent copy in the lightly marked, creased and nicked, minimally rubbed and slightly sunned dust jacket.

  9. Limited edition, one of 350 examples on verge, from a total edition of 358; 8vo, (20.4 x 14 cm); woodcut frontispiece and initials after Edward Burne-Jones, printed in black and red; finely bound in green morocco by Leonard Mounteney, elaborate gilt tooling and red morocco flowers, spine in five parts with raised bands, corresponding flower design and title in gilt, rose-coloured watered silk doublures and flyleaves, top edge gilt, enclosed in patterned paper board slipcase, spine slightly faded, an excellent example.

  10. First edition, first impression; 8vo; 8 black and white illustrated plates, including portrait frontispiece of Rossetti, scattered marginal foxing; publisher's maroon cloth, titles to spine gilt, some spotting to edges, endpapers slightly toned, with the printed dust jacket, light soiling and staining to jacket, particularly to spine and back panel, a few small closed tears to edges of front and back panels.
