New York Book Fair 2022

After two years we are absolutely delighted to be exhibiting once more in the Park Avenue Armory.  We have secured one of the key stands for this New York Book Fair, Stand E3, allowing us to bring a wonderful range from across our various departments, a selection of which we present below.

  1. 8vo, (194 x 130 mm); three volumes, original blue velvet boards, framed by metal silver-plated edges with working clasps, silver-plated corner ornaments to covers (corner ornaments missing on the back of vol. III); silver-plated engraved name plate to each volume's front cover and a silver-plated monogram to each volume's back cover. Gilt edges, textures cloth endpapers, pages crisp and clean.   2. First edition. Six volumes (separate volume for the five scrolls); octavo, (19.5 x 13 cm). Two title pages - Hebrew and English to each of the first five volumes. Sixth vol. published with the Hebrew title page only and a divisional Hebrew-English title page for each scroll. Hebrew title pages are engraved by Solomon Polack. Staining and browning to pages, repaired tears to some pages. The five scrolls vol. contains illustration plate depicting the ten sons of Haman hanged. Recent marbled boards with black spines and gilt ornaments to the first five volumes; contemporary brown boards with gilt ornaments to the sixth volume, significantly rubbed and cracked (but holding).

First edition, 2 volumes 8vo, x, 303; vi, 295 pp., folding map as frontispiece to volume I, plate of the JuJu House as frontispiece to volume II, original purple-brown pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to the spine, triple blind panel to the boards, yellow surface-paper endpapers, neat repairs to spine extremities, an excellent set.

  4. First edition. 8vo, [iv], 37, [iii]pp., one of only 75 numbered copies printed, this number 49, publisher's cloth-backed salmon coloured paper boards. with the publisher's glassine dust wrapper still intact, 2 light wear to glassine, modern blue morocco foldover box, a fine copy.

  5. Folio (48.5 x 31.5 cm), engraved additional title dated 1821, coloured by hand, 50 hand-coloured engraved plates, text in English and French; nineteenth century green polished half calf gilt, red morocco label, presented in original cloth backed slipcase, a fine clean copy.

First English edition, first impression, first issue; 8vo; publisher's blue cloth, titles and star device to spine in silver, marbled endpapers, grey topstain, with the dust jacket; spine gently rolled, topstain faded, very mild ghosting to spine through the dust jacket but an exceptional copy in the lightly spotted, and tanned dust jacket missing a small piece at the top of the spine panel. A lovely copy.

Limited edition, one of 32 examples on japon nacré, signed by the author and artist, from a total edition of 140, folio (38 x 28 cm); 8 etchings in colour after Delaunay, plus an extra suite in colour also on nacré with each plate signed in pencil, an additional signed etching hand-coloured in gouache by the artist, loose as issue, with tissue guards; in the original lithographed chemise and slipcase, a fine example.

Single volume, illuminated manuscript on fibrous polished buff paper, in Farsi, textually complete (lacking 4 leaves at the end of Book 6 that are replaced in eighteenth and nineteenth century manuscript facsimile, 337 leaves plus 4 leaves text, 245 by 170 mm; four columns, 21 lines early nasta'liq script in black, headings in red throughout, 6 gold and lapis illuminated headings in the Timurid style, each opening one of the 6 books of the Mathnavi, contemporary catch-words throughout, columns ruled in blue, some very slight water-staining to margins and a few scattered smudges to text, overall attractive condition; early sixteenth-century stamped leather binding with flap, with cut-out cartouches to leather decorated by corner-pieces and central medallions with foliate designs and coloured in gold, spine and flap hinge rebacked and repaired, an attractive early binding.

Single volume, illuminated manuscript on fine polished paper, in Farsi, 121 leaves, 250 by 165 mm; double column, 15 lines fine black nasta'liq script, headings in gold or blue throughout, illuminated polychrome headpiece opening the text, richly decorated in gold and lapis, with 7 additional illuminated banners in the text (each of these opening the ghazals of a new poet), remains of silk markers to outer edges of each section, catch-words throughout, leaves ruled in gilt, orange and blue throughout, a few small smudges, outer margin of first leaf repaired (not affecting text), overall very bright and attractive condition internally; housed in a fine contemporary hand-painted black leather binding with flap, painted in gilt with spiralling floral motif, with sunken central medallions and corner-pieces decorated with gilt filigree details, ruled in gilt, with very fine tan leather doubleurs, central medallions and corner-pieces with delicate incised leather filigree work over navy and green silk backdrops, spine and flap rebacked and edges repaired, overall fine and very attractive binding.
