First edition. 2 volumes, folio. limited edition to 500 copies. 172 large collotype plates with tissue guards including three folding panoramas. Original embroidered silk portfolio in cardboard boxes (worn with old repairs). Minor rubbing to edges of portfolio, but overall a very good copy. Separate volume of text in English and Japanese in original cream wrappers.

2 vols, comprising the red vinyl bound issued for brigade teams and the printed wrappers bound issued for high-ranking officers, first editions; 16mo (c.140 x 105 mm); printed in Chinese, each with half-title in red, title-page in red & green, photographic portrait of Chairman Mao, facsimile of Lin Biao's calligraphic endorsement of Mao's writings in the uncorrected state with the superfluous mark, vinyl issue with ink note in English and Chinese to front free endpaper, wrappers issue with official stamp to title and some contemporary underlining; vinyl issue with title and star incised to upper cover, over white stiff wrappers; wrappers issue upper cover with title printed in black on red rectangle and with imprint to foot, further official stamp and contemporary inscription also to upper cover, with some marking to the lower cover and a little edge wear; each [viii], 250pp.

Second edition, 'mise en un meilleur ordre', 4 parts in 2 vols; folio (35 x 27.5 cm); introduction by Bazin, 179 of 181 hand-coloured lithographs (on 177 leaves), with four leaves of music and a hand-coloured vignette, engraved by Aubry-le-Comte, Deveria, Grévédon after drawings by père Castiglione, Pu-Qua and William Alexander (from Pittoresque representations of the dress and manners of the Chinese), Chambers, Dadley etc.,; quarter green morocco with blue marbled boards, spines in compartments with gilt and black morocco design, gilt title to second, some plates with minor stains, edges bumped, a fine copy.

Humbolt, 4 engraved head-pieces after Humbolt, 65 engraved plates, the majority of these maps, many folding or double-page (a few with contemporary outline-colouring), by Delahaye, Desbrulins, and Fonbonne after Humblot, Lucas, Le Parmentier and others, engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut head-pieces. (first half title creased with paper flaw to lower outer corner, some occasional pale spotting or minor browning, minor marginal hole in Aaaaaa1.) Contemporary French mottled calf, sides with central gilt-stamped arms, spines in seven compartments with six raised bands, each with red and brown gilt-lettered lettering pieces in two compartments, gilt-decorated panels in the rest, small repairs to extremities, a very handsome set.
