In 1839 Texier made his great expedition to Mesopotamia. The result was the present impressive work. It includes descriptions and maps of the great ancient sites, reports of regional geography and geology, descriptions of art works and architecture, etc. Notably Texier made one of the most important surveys of Persepolis. In Persia he recorded many important friezes and artworks. His travels in Armenia resulted in the most important archaeological record of the area up to that time. It is a scarce book and rarely found in good condition.

Previously Texier had superintended excavations in Ostia before going to the Levant, which he visited three times between 1834 and 1836. These journeys formed the basis for his other great work, L' Asie Mineure.
