Allom spent nine months in Constantinople during 1836-37, preparing the drawings for this work. Originally issued in parts, it provides a fine pictorial records of Constantinople, and ranks as one of the most attractive steel-engraved books of the period.

Like Koç 315a, this copy has the extra plate 'Ancient Archway and Cavern in the Balkan Mountains ' (plate 24 in this copy). Unlike Koç 315a, it also has the 'Historical Sketch of Constantinople', the general index, and the double-page map which are not present in that copy. This copy is printed Fisher, Son, & Co., so predates Koç 315a which is printed by Peter Jackson, late Fisher, Son, & Co. The book was originally published by Fisher, Son, & Co. in 1836-38 (Koç 315) which does not have the extra plate in vol. 1.
