Originally published in Calcutta. 'The author was an officer of the Bengal Establishment sent to Shiraz for an eight months assignment. An important book in the growing interest of Orientalism. There are numerous references to Hafez (Francklin's book was read by Byron amongst others). The book is also important for the retelling of comments the author had heard about Karim Khan Zand'.
