First English edition of The History of the Inquisition, translated by Samuel Chandler. The work notably details the Alhambra Decree (also known as the Edict of Expulsion), ordering the expulsion of practising Jews from the Crowns of Castile and Aragon and its territories in 1492. Both volumes are illustrated with bright, well-preserved engraved plates, including the depiction of the torture used in the Inquisition.

First English edition; 2 vols, 4to, (26.2 x 20 cm); titles printed in red and black, 9 engraved plates, 3 of which are folding, engraved head and tail pieces and initials, light dampstaining to both volumes, marbled endpapers, rear endpapers of volume 2 repaired; contemporary full calf, rebacked, triple gilt rule borders to boards, spines gilt in compartments, gilt lettering to spines on black morocco labels, some scattered scuffing to boards, corners rubbed, otherwise a good set; xxii, 260; xvi, 319 pp.
