First edition; 4to, (262 x 200 mm); number 297 of 535 copies; hand-coloured pochoir plates by E. McKnight Kauffer, comprising 8 full-page drawings and 1 title-page vignette, prelims spotted and browned; original dark brown cloth, leaves uncut, spine and boards slightly sunned, extremities rubbed.

Number 74 of 350 printed on Rives paper, of a total edition (for America) of 420; landscape 4to; six colour plates with lithographs by Laurencin, minute spotting; publisher's white wrappers lettered in red and black original glassine and tissue guards, pale pink chemise, and silver trimmed slipcase. Some light occasional and trivial spotting as usual, red pencil ownership signature (C. B. Judge) but a stunning copy in entirely original condition.

First Stockdale edition and the first edition to be illustrated by Thomas Stothard, 2 volumes; large 8vo; 14 engraved plates after Thomas Stothard by Medland, author portrait prior to the Life of Defoe, contemporary straight-grained crimson morocco, boards with wide border of gilt fillets and roll tools, spine compartments with floral design made up of pointillé tools, green morocco title labels and volume numbers directly lettered, gilt turn-ins and edges, title-page and frontispiece to vol. I with small burn repair to each in outer margin, occasional spotting or light browning, without the list of subscribers, board edges lightly rubbed, a few minor ink spots on covers of vol. I, otherwise a very good set; 389; 456pp.
