It is an attempt to fill a long-felt want, to provide a companions for those who attend the performances of the Sadler's Wells Ballet and desire fuller information about a ballet than is available in a programme note.'

Cyril W. Beaumont, OBE (1891 –1976), British dance historian, critic, technical theorist, translator, bookseller and publisher. He was the Author of more than forty books on ballet and is considered one of the most important dance historians of the twentieth century.
