Sir Frederick Treves was the prominent Victorian surgeon famous for treating Joseph Merrick sometimes known 'The Elephant Man'. He spent much time in Africa working in hospitals during the Boer War. His ability as an author is also well recognised and this interesting travel book includes chapters on game reserves and railways.
