Sven Hedin's Swedish Scientific Expedition to Central Asia spent over two years exploring the region before Hedin's friend and supporter, the Governor General of the province was murdered. This threatened the future of the expedition and matters were further complicated by Hedin falling seriously ill. Eventually the expedition was allowed to continue. Riddles not only gives a full account of these travails but also includes the important reports such as that of Henning Haslund at the court of the Mongol Prince, and Nils Horner's explorations of the Tarim River and Lake Lopnor. A companion volume to Across the Gobi Desert, published in 1931.
