Russell was a physician to the English factory in Aleppo for a period from 1740. He learnt Arabic and acquired great influence with the Pasha and people of all creeds. This work has been described as one of the most complete pictures of Eastern manners extant (Pinkerton) and was reviewed by Dr Johnson in the Literary Magazine.

First edition. 4to, viii, 266, [10] pp., 16 engraved folding plates (complete), modern tan morocco-backed marbled boards, new endpapers, light offsetting from plates to text, a very good clean copy.
