Thomas Raffles was originally a clerk in East India House, his talents were noticed and he was promoted and sent to Penang under the command of Lord Minto, who successfully undertook the reduction of Java, due in no small measure to the tact and local knowledge of Raffles.

4to, xv, [i], 723, [i], 100 pp., portrait frontispiece, 3 maps, 1 chart, 1 engraved plate, 5 fine aquatint plates including the large folding view of Singapore, plates a little browned, small marginal stain to page 1, a couple of pages with short marginal tears outside text neatly repaired, modern full calf richly gilt, red morocco label, a good copy.
