Burns Night 2021

  1. 21 vols, Sml. 8vo (180 x 130 mm (7 1/4 x 5 in); small, marginal corner stain affecting poart of one vol. (When a Man's Single), otherwise clean and bright; publisher's full blue calf, spines gilt, author's gilt monogram to front covers, top edge gilt, near-fine.

  3. 18 bright and fresh watercolours, most of Scottish Lowland scenery, including coastal loch and sea views, and a few continental lakeside views, each average 17.5 x 25 cm (7 x 10 inches), on stiff wove paper mounted at corners to album leaves, along with several other pencil drawings, two with monochrome washes, by Burgess, including an excellent tree study, and his pupil, Lady Harriett Kerr, 3 initialled by her, mostly further continental landscapes, contained in a half-calf album, 4to. The watercolours in good, clean condition, the drawings generally likewise, the binding rubbed, corners slightly worn, calf spine sunned, cloth boards also unevenly faded.

First edition. 5 volumes, 4to., engraved title vignettes, three large folding maps, 55 engraved plates including 53 natural history studies, four leaves of Ethiopian script, small paper flaw to blank margin page 27 volume V, very occasional light foxing, contemporary calf gilt, neat repairs to extremities, a fine, fresh set.
