In 1908 Wavell (1882-1916), travelled in disguise via Beirut and Damascus, reaching Mecca and Medina via the Hedjaz railway. From there he made his way secretly to Sanaa where he witnessed the 1911 siege when the Yemenis sought to expel the Turks.
