Group of six insects, copper engraved plates with fine original colour, showing the metamorphosis of butterflies, moths and other flying insects. Framed and glazed, overall size: 31.6cm by 46.7cm.

Hand-coloured pictorial title-page, hand-coloured presentation page, 10 fine hand-coloured lithograph plates, text printed in red with decorative borders of grasses printed in gold. Contemporary green morocco gilt, covers with fancy gilt borders and decorative gilt centre panel, panelled spine in 6 compartments, red morocco lettering piece with gilt to second, others richly gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt.

Folio, (40.5 x 29 cm); text in English and French, title and spine dated 1766 but actually 1794 (1794 watermarked paper), additional hand-coloured decorative title, hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, 44 hand-coloured engraved plates, scattered light foxing (not affecting plates), occasional light marginal dust-staining (not affecting illustrations), ex libris to front free endpaper; contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, corners slightly rubbed, an excellent copy; iv, 145, [iv, index]pp.

First edition; 2 vols, 4to; 124 hand-coloured plates, occasional mild spotting otherwise very good; contemporary half green calf, maroon lettering-pieces gilt, all edges marbled, mild dust-soiling and darkening commensurate with age, rubbed at extremities, bumper on corners but otherwise a very good set.

Buys, including one enhanced in colour, hand-coloured title engraved by C.J. de Huyser, and 442 hand-coloured plates (42 of which are in the Supplement), with 10 titles including one engraved and hand-coloured, and two leaves of subscribers; beautifully bound in full contemporary red morocco (for the first 4 volumes), spines with raised bands, richly decorated, titles, volume numbers and provenance in green morocco, gilt fillets on the boards and on the edges, gilt inner dentelle, all edges gilt, identical pastiche binding for the 5th volume (Supplement); an excellent copy.
