The Countess Maud Fitzwilliam was an avid horsewoman who had also become a champion for pit pony rights, serving as president of the Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Pit Ponies. She was also a benefactress of mining families working in her husband's collieries.

First edition; 8vo (225 x 155 mm); 12 tissue-guarded, colour illustrations by Harry Morley and a further 8 in sepia, neat gift presentation to half-title; near contemporary half morocco by Hatchards, Piccadillly, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, as published, spine darkened, rubbed at extremities, otherwise very good.
