This was the first sustained attempt to describe the discovery, conquest and settlement of Spanish America since Herrera's Décadas. Robertson intended to continue his work with the history of the British Dominions in North America. The work remained unfinished with the outbreak of the American War of Independence and it was edited for publication by his son after Robertson's death. This part forms
books 9-10 of The History of America and consists of the History of Virginia and The History of New England.
