New York Book Fair 2022

After two years we are absolutely delighted to be exhibiting once more in the Park Avenue Armory.  We have secured one of the key stands for this New York Book Fair, Stand E3, allowing us to bring a wonderful range from across our various departments, a selection of which we present below.

Stamped presentation copy. 2 volumes, text and atlas, 4to., xvii, 469 pp., text volume: half-title, photogravure frontispiece and 25 photogravure plates, all with printed tissue guards, 5 double-page photographic panoramas (2 showing 2 views), numerous photographic illustrations in the text, all after photographs by Vittorio Sella, 2 coloured photographic plates of geological specimens. Atlas: 16pp. list of illustrations and index, 18 folding photographic panoramas on 17 sheets after Sella (K & L on 1 sheet), 3 folding coloured maps, all housed loose in portfolio, uniformly bound in publisher's vellum gilt, text volume top edge gilt, joints rubbed, spines soiled, internally a fine fresh copy.

  2. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, xii, [i], 503; vi, [i], 519 pp., folding map 4 plans, 11 plates, original brown cloth gilt, gilt pictorial vignette to upper cover, small waterstain to first frontispiece outer margin, neat repairs to spine extremities and inner hinges, a very good set.

  3. Gilt bronze medallion by William Hackwood for Josiah Wedgwood, circa 33 mm diameter, fine, with much original gilding remaining, some light wear to extremities, old tone.

  4. First edition in French, small quarto [xxiv], 191, [i], 235, [i], 230, [i] pp., engraved title vignette, 50 plates in the letterpress, 2 full-page, later (nineteenth/twentieth century) calf gilt, an excellent example.

  5. Second edition, 4to, engraved folding map and 16 double-page plates and plans (plate 1 a little frayed and browned), light marginal waterstain at beginning and occasionally elsewhere, contemporary calf, rebacked preserving spine, arms to upper cover, a very good copy.

First edition; 2 vols, 4to, (329 x 265 mm); complete with 14 lithographic plates, 112 woodcuts, 5 maps, 31 engraved plates of fossils, 9 folding hand-coloured geological sections signed by the author, some pages lightly spotted,second vol contains large, hand-coloured engraved 3 sheet folding map signed by Murchison of 'The Silurian Region and Adjacent Counties of England & Wales, Geologically Illustrated', also containing a 'map of England and Wales, Coloured according to Geological Systems', 28 compartments, (976 x 1633 mm), backed on red silk edged linen, with autographed letter signed 'Rodk Murchison' to the French naturalist Dr Henri Milne-Edwards, asking for an 'account of the Serpulina formed shelly body' for his description of the Ludlow rocks; fine contemporary calf binding with red morocco labels on decorated spine, gilt ruled boards with ornithological motif gilt stamped on upper cover, corners of boards and spine slightly bumped; 768pp, overall a very good copy.

First edition; 4to (33 x 25 cm); signed and inscribed by the author on the upper fly leaf to Isaar Saulovich Gurvich-Issarov, dated 1930; chromolithographic title and 34 full-page chromolithographic illustrations; modern full morocco binding with design to match the original cover, gilt title to spine, original covers bound in (upper cover window mounted), minor spotting to a few plates but overall an excellent example.

  9. Limited edition, one of 25 copies on japon impérial, from a total edition of 345; 4to (24 x 17 cm); translated by André Gide and Jacques Schiffrin, signed 'J. Sch' on the limitation page, foreword by Gide, illustrations in colour by Shukhaev including 7 plates hors-texte, with two additional suites of 19 illustrations each, loose in a separate portfolio, one in colour on japon and one in black on chine, with tissue guards, a.e.g.; 20th century fine binding by Hélène Cauchetier, full green morocco with original wrappers bound in, upper cover with playing card motif inlay design of various colours, doublures with green patterned paper guards, green marbled endpapers, chemise and slipcase, extra suites in a corresponding chemise, an excellent example.

Folio (41.4 x 26.8 cm.), two title-pages, text in two columns, ruled in red, two printed title-pages, extra-illustrated with 213 engraved plates (29 double-page), marbled endpapers, some minor marginal staining to some plates, bookplates; bound in contemporary navy morocco gilt with the arms of the second duke of Newcastle, all edges gilt, the border beautifully decorated with an elaborate gilt design , spines also gilt in compartments, gilt edges, bindings slightly faded, extremities very slightly rubbed; otherwise an excellent copy.
