HEWITSON, William C.

British Oology

being Illustrations of the Eggs of British Birds.

Newcastle, Charles Empson, 1831
£2,250

An exceptional example of an important ornithological work with a letter from the author.

Mullens (who presented this copy to Thomas Parkin) describes the work as 'a standard work and esteemed for the exactness of the figures'. Hewitson, a founder member of the Natural History Society of Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle Upon Tyne, was fascinated by the study of birds and their eggs. He was an accomplished illustrator and personally produced these illustrations of eggs.

This copy is also unusual as it retains the separate title-page for the third volume, usually discarded by owners following the author's instructions to have the set bound in two volumes; no separate title-page was issued for the supplement, which contains fourteen plates and is often absent.
